Believe it or not, the Head-Up Display, or HUD has been around since the 1950s in different concept cars, and it first arrived on production vehicles in 1988. Since then, many different vehicles across numerous brands have featured the technology. Now, though, Hyundai Mobis, the car parts and service supplier division of Hyundai Motor Group, has created a holographic version of the HUD that is cast onto the entire windshield of the car—but only the driver can see it.

A Major Automotive Parts Supplier

Hyundai Mobis was initially established by Hyundai way back in 1977 as the Hyundai Precision and Industries Corporation. Hyundai changed the name to Hyundai Mobis in 2000, and according to Bloomberg in 2014, the company was the sixth largest parts supplier to the automotive industry. Hyundai Mobis makes many things, from chassis to safety equipment, anti-lock braking systems, and so much more.

A Completely Unique Technology at CES 2025

At this year’s Consumer Electronic Show (CES), the company debuted its latest breakthrough technology, using a Kia EV9 as its test vehicle for all to behold. The holographic HUD shows different types of driving information, such as navigation and driving data, as well as the music you’re listening to. It should be noted that the HUD does not take up the entire windshield. Instead, it displays at the bottom of a vehicle’s windscreen so as not to be too distracting or make you feel like you’re living in virtual reality.

Hyundai Mobis and Zeiss, A Perfect Match

Hyundai Mobis partnered with legendary German optical company Zeiss, the maker of high-end camera lenses, telescopes, microscopes, binoculars, eyeglasses, and pretty much anything else that calls on high-quality glass lenses to be used. The two companies were able to create this tech by using a special type of film that features a Holographic Optical Element (HOE) that allows light diffraction to occur and display a desired image, such as the HUD in this case.

The Holographic HUD Doesn’t Get Affected by Sunlight

What makes the holographic HUD truly unique is that the system isn’t just projected onto the windshield but instead uses a special film and the Holographic Optical Element. It is not affected by sunlight, headlights, or taillights like our eyes are. So the image stays crystal clear no matter what.

On The Road By 2027

This type of technology can help reduce vehicle accidents by cutting down on the number of times a driver looks at the infotainment screen when needing directions from the navigation system. While this technology isn’t fully ready for mass production just yet, the pair of companies say they plan to have the holographic HUD enter full-production vehicles by 2027.
